The surfboard has moved beyond its sporting function into contemporary art and high-end interior design. This is the domain of Ressak Studio.

A certified art craft

Based in the Basque Country and holder of France’s Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage) state label — the same as the UWL workshop — Ressak Studio creates exceptional decorative boards, entirely handmade. Each piece requires dozens of hours of shaping and museum-grade lamination for a mirror-polished finish.

Art under the cloth

The studio partners with contemporary artists: the artwork is painted, screen-printed or printed directly beneath the protective fibreglass layer. Among the emblematic creations:

  • Samouraï — a black-and-white graphic shortboard of Japanese inspiration;
  • Free Bird — floral artwork over deep olive-green tinted resin;
  • Horses — a 7’4 mid-length in cream and terracotta tones, equestrian motifs;
  • Colonne — a wall piece with dark burgundy anatomical and floral motifs.

Design and glide

Made for collectors, interior architects and lovers of aesthetic glide, these boards marry the rigour of art craft with the modernity of design. Another facet of the world this journal documents: the board as a total cultural object.
