Shaping in Charente-Maritime begins in the late 1960s, when Jean-Pierre Cardinal becomes one of La Rochelle’s first surfers. The passion passes to his sons, Renaud and Thomas, who shape their first boards as teenagers. In 1991, the UWL manufacture is officially born in a family outbuilding.

The Californian turning point

A formative trip to California gives the brothers a technical and commercial edge on the European market. In 2001, the company builds a modern 500 m² workshop — later extended to 700 m² — in Angoulins, equipped with an APS3000 CNC cutting machine and a fibreglass printing system. This is where the discipline of a craft blending machine and hand finishing takes shape.

From brand to ecosystem

The move to the Shapers Club umbrella marks a turning point. The model gathers several brands under one collaborative entity — Cardinal, Renaud Cardinal’s precision range, or Addiction — while preserving each maker’s identity. Earning France’s Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage) state label, shared by only 1,600 companies, speaks to the workshop’s technical excellence.

To support its growth, the Shapers Club expands onto a new 1,800 m² site in Marennes, in the Zone des Grossines: a 300 m² showroom, a community bar, a training skatepark, a coworking space for young makers, and a cellar of foam blanks ready to be glassed. Marketing support for guest shapers is handled by the UWL Communication branch.

Craft that radiates

From this local anchor now radiates a network of international shaper brands distributed across Europe, and a retail offer accessible through the AchatSurf buying guide. Thirty-five years after the first board cut in an Angoulins outbuilding, the UWL Surfboards workshop upholds the same standard: one board, one surfer, shaped by hand.

To place this story in its territory, Charente-Maritime is also a wave-rich coast recognised by the French Surfing Federation.
